For Eastern Chickahominy citizens and families

Addiction Treatment for Chickahominy Eastern Division Citizens

If you are a citizen of the Chickahominy Indian Tribe, Eastern Division, IHS may pay for addiction treatment services at Thundermaker Wellness Center in Prescott, Arizona. Thundermaker is a confirmed IHS Purchased/Referred Care (PRC) provider for the Nashville Area, and the Eastern Division is served by the Nashville Area's Mid Atlantic Service Unit.

From New Kent County, your PRC request goes straight to the Mid Atlantic Tribal Health Center in Charles City. Call (804) 622-0011, ask for Purchased/Referred Care, and say you want Thundermaker. After that, call us at (928) 531-1930 and we take over the paperwork with your PRC office.

PRC pays for care IHS is unable to provide in its own facilities. Approval rests on eligibility, medical priority, and other coverage.

Who Handles My PRC Request?

The Eastern Division's citizens are served by the IHS Mid Atlantic Service Unit. The service unit's clinic handles every Purchased/Referred Care request, so that is where you begin.

The clinic's behavioral health staff can talk through what level of care makes sense if you are not sure yet. The Eastern Division's tribal office is at 2895 Mount Pleasant Road in Providence Forge, (804) 966-7815. Check out the Tribe on this tribal page (opens in new tab) for other resources.

Do I Live in the PRC Delivery Area (PRCDA)?

PRC is for people who live in the PRC delivery area (PRCDA). Since December 2023, the seven Mid Atlantic tribes, the Eastern Division included, have shared one combined PRCDA: most of Virginia, 16 Maryland counties and Baltimore City, and 21 North Carolina counties.

For Eastern Chickahominy families that covers New Kent County, where the Tribe's land is, as well as James City County, Henrico County, Williamsburg, and Richmond.

Outside those places? The PRC office can tell you where you stand.

How Do I Get Started?

Follow these three steps in order. PRC must approve your care before it begins.

  1. Phone the PRC officeCall the Mid Atlantic Tribal Health Center at (804) 622-0011. Ask for Purchased/Referred Care, say you are an Eastern Chickahominy citizen who wants addiction treatment, and request Thundermaker Wellness Center.
  2. Phone usCall (928) 531-1930 at any hour of the day or night. We collect the clinical information PRC needs and stay on it with the office until you get an answer. Referring staff can ask for Jeri.
  3. Head to PrescottAfter approval, we settle on a start date with you and help with travel from New Kent. On your first day, you get settled, meet the people who will work with you, and start your plan. Read about the first day.

Get emergency care first. Then tell your PRC office within 72 hours, or within 30 days if you are 65 or older or have a disability. Without that notice, PRC usually will not pay.

At home, the same streets, the same people, and the same routines can pull you back toward drinking or using before your recovery has roots. Time away from New Kent puts real distance between you and those triggers, so your days can go to healing. For many people, a fresh setting far from old habits and easy access is the healthier place to start.

At Thundermaker, Native ownership and Native staff shape the whole program, and many of us have walked this road. Ceremony, sweat lodge, drum, garden work, and traditional arts run beside licensed counseling in our Cultural and Traditional Program. Depending on your needs, you may join the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), or individual and family counseling.

If treatment closer to New Kent is what you need, the Mid Atlantic clinic can talk with you about that too.

Every person who reaches out is welcomed as a relative.
