Addiction Treatment for Nansemond Indian Nation Citizens

If you are a Nansemond Indian Nation citizen, IHS may pay for addiction treatment services at Thundermaker Wellness Center in Prescott, Arizona. Thundermaker is a confirmed IHS Purchased/Referred Care (PRC) provider for the Nashville Area, which includes the Mid Atlantic Service Unit that serves the Nansemond Indian Nation.

Start with your service unit. Call the Mid Atlantic Tribal Health Center in Charles City, Virginia, at (804) 622-0011, ask about Purchased/Referred Care for addiction treatment, and request Thundermaker by name. Then call us at (928) 531-1930 and we work the authorization with your PRC office.

PRC is used when IHS is unable to offer a service at its own facilities. Your service unit decides each request based on eligibility, medical priority, and any other coverage you have.

Who Handles My PRC Request?

Nansemond citizens are served by the Mid Atlantic Service Unit of the Indian Health Service. Its clinic, the Mid Atlantic Tribal Health Center, is where your Purchased/Referred Care request starts. The clinic also offers behavioral health assessment and counseling, which is a good first conversation if you are not sure what level of care you need.

The Nansemond Indian Nation's own health page points citizens to the same service unit. You can reach the Nation's office in Suffolk at (757) 255-9317. Check out the Nation on this tribal page (opens in new tab) for other resources.

Do I Live in the PRC Delivery Area (PRCDA)?

PRC pays only for citizens who live inside the PRC delivery area (PRCDA). In December 2023, IHS combined the PRCDAs of the seven Mid Atlantic tribes, including the Nansemond, into one larger PRCDA. It now covers most of Virginia, 16 Maryland counties and Baltimore City, and 21 North Carolina counties.

Every city in Hampton Roads is included: Suffolk, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Hampton, Newport News, and Williamsburg. So are Richmond and the counties around it.

If you live somewhere else, you may still qualify for care at IHS clinics, and your service unit can tell you what applies.

How Do I Get Started?

Three steps. The order matters, because PRC has to know before care begins.

  1. Contact your service unitCall the Mid Atlantic Tribal Health Center at (804) 622-0011. Say you are a Nansemond citizen looking for addiction treatment, ask for Purchased/Referred Care, and request Thundermaker Wellness Center by name.
  2. Call usCall (928) 531-1930, any hour, and ask for admissions. We prepare the clinical paperwork and work the authorization with your PRC office. Referring staff can ask for Jeri.
  3. You come to PrescottOnce PRC approves, we set your start date and help plan the trip from Virginia. On your first day you meet the team and build your plan with your counselor. Read what to expect your first day.

In an emergency, get care first. Then notify your PRC office within 72 hours, or within 30 days if you are 65 or older or have a disability. Care received without notifying PRC is usually not paid.

Why Should I Pick Thundermaker for My Treatment and Recovery in Arizona?

Some people need distance from the places and people tied to their drinking or using before recovery can take hold. Across the country from Hampton Roads, old routines and easy access fall away, and a fresh start helps you focus on healing. Many also want a program where their culture is part of the treatment from the first day.

Thundermaker is Native owned and operated and led by Native staff who have walked this road. Ceremony, sweat lodge, drum, garden, and traditional arts run alongside licensed counseling through our Cultural and Traditional Program. Our care includes the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), and individual and family counseling.

If staying close to home is right for you, ask your service unit about options in Virginia. Our goal is that you get treatment, wherever that happens.

Every person who reaches out is welcomed as a relative.
