For Monacan citizens and families
Addiction Treatment for Monacan Indian Nation Citizens
If you are a Monacan Indian Nation citizen, IHS may pay for addiction treatment services at Thundermaker Wellness Center in Prescott, Arizona. Thundermaker is a confirmed IHS Purchased/Referred Care (PRC) provider for the Nashville Area, and the Nashville Area serves the Monacan through the Monacan Health Center in Amherst County.
Your PRC request starts at the Monacan Health Center in Madison Heights, (434) 895-6672. Talk with the PRC technician there before any care begins, and ask for Thundermaker by name. Then call us at (928) 531-1930 and we work with the health center on the rest.
PRC pays for services IHS cannot offer itself. Each request is decided on eligibility, medical priority, and other coverage.

We answer your call 24 hours a day.
Who Handles My PRC Request?
Monacan citizens have their own IHS clinic. The Monacan Health Center in Madison Heights handles Purchased/Referred Care for the Nation, so your request does not go to Charles City.
- Monacan Health Center, 108 Dixie Airport Road, Madison Heights, VA 24572 (opens in new tab)
- Phone (434) 895-6672. Ask for the PRC technician.
- Monacan Indian Nation Medical Services (opens in new tab)
The health center already offers substance use assessment and therapy, plus individual and family therapy, so it is the right first conversation. The Nation's tribal office at 111 Highview Drive, (434) 363-4864, can also help with PRC questions. Check out the Nation on this tribal page (opens in new tab) for other resources.
Do I Live in the PRC Delivery Area (PRCDA)?

PRC pays for people living in the PRC delivery area (PRCDA). In December 2023, IHS merged the areas of the seven Mid Atlantic tribes, the Monacan among them, into one region covering most of Virginia, 16 Maryland counties and Baltimore City, and 21 North Carolina counties.
Around Bear Mountain, that means Amherst, Nelson, Bedford, Campbell, Appomattox, and Rockbridge counties, along with the city of Lynchburg.
If you live somewhere else, the health center can tell you what applies.
How Do I Get Started?
Three steps, in this order. The PRC technician must hear from you before treatment begins.
- Talk to the Monacan Health CenterCall (434) 895-6672 and ask for the PRC technician. If you have not had a substance use assessment, the health center can do one. Tell them you want addiction treatment and name Thundermaker Wellness Center.
- Talk to usCall admissions at (928) 531-1930, day or night. We send the clinical information the health center needs and follow your request until it is decided. Referring staff can ask for Jeri.
- Come out to PrescottOnce approved, we schedule your start and help you plan travel from Amherst County. Your first day is about settling in, meeting the team, and starting your plan. Read about your first day.
In an emergency, get care right away. Then tell the Monacan Health Center PRC technician within 72 hours, or within 30 days if you are 65 or older or have a disability. PRC usually will not pay for care it was not told about.
