Addiction Treatment for Upper Mattaponi Tribe Citizens
Citizens of the Upper Mattaponi Indian Tribe may be able to use IHS funds for addiction treatment services at Thundermaker Wellness Center in Prescott, Arizona. Thundermaker is a confirmed IHS Purchased/Referred Care (PRC) provider for the Nashville Area, and the Nashville Area's Mid Atlantic Service Unit serves the Upper Mattaponi.
You already have counseling close to home through UMT Behavioral Health in Aylett. When you and your counselor decide you need more, call the Mid Atlantic Tribal Health Center at (804) 622-0011, ask for Purchased/Referred Care, and request Thundermaker by name. Then reach us at (928) 531-1930.
PRC helps pay for services IHS cannot provide in its own clinics. The office looks at eligibility, medical priority, and other coverage on every request.

We answer your call 24 hours a day.

Do I Live in the PRC Delivery Area (PRCDA)?
To use PRC, you have to live in the PRC delivery area (PRCDA). In December 2023, IHS joined the areas of the seven Mid Atlantic tribes into a single region, and the Upper Mattaponi share it. It reaches across most of Virginia, into 16 Maryland counties and Baltimore City, and into 21 North Carolina counties.
Around Aylett, the list includes King William, King and Queen, Caroline, and Hanover counties.
If your address falls outside it, ask the PRC office what applies to you.
How Do I Get Started?
Three steps. Keep them in this order, because PRC has to approve care before it begins.
- Talk with your counselorIf you see UMT Behavioral Health, tell your counselor you are thinking about more treatment. They know your story and can help you decide.
- Call the Mid Atlantic clinicPhone (804) 622-0011 and ask for Purchased/Referred Care. Say you are an Upper Mattaponi citizen seeking addiction treatment and request Thundermaker Wellness Center by name.
- Call usAdmissions answers (928) 531-1930 at any hour. We prepare the clinical paperwork, stay in touch with your PRC office, and help plan your trip to Prescott once you are approved. Referring staff can ask for Jeri.
Emergencies come before paperwork. Get care, then let your PRC office know within 72 hours, or within 30 days if you are 65 or older or have a disability. PRC often denies care it was not told about.
Why Should I Pick Thundermaker for My Treatment and Recovery in Arizona?

UMT Behavioral Health gives you counseling in your own community. Sometimes a person also needs a stretch of time away from Aylett, away from the people and places tied to using and the pressures of everyday life. Time away gives you a clean break from old patterns, a full day built around getting well, and other Native people walking the same road.
That is what Thundermaker offers. We are Native owned and operated, with Native staff who have lived recovery. Our Cultural and Traditional Program places ceremony, sweat lodge, drum, garden work, and traditional arts next to licensed counseling. You may take part in the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), or individual and family counseling.
When you finish, we work with UMT Behavioral Health so your counseling picks up again at home in Aylett.
Every person who reaches out is welcomed as a relative.
